Before the Aztecs, there were at least three great civilizations in Mexico: the
Mayas, the Olmecs, and the Toltecs.  The Aztecs were in power when the Spanish
came to the New World under the leadership of Hernando Cortes.  Spain ruled
Mexico for the next 300 years until September 16, 1810, when the Mexicans first
started fighting for their independence, which they won in 1811.  In 1855, the
Indian patriot Benito Juarez instituted reforms in Mexico, one of which one was
the disestablishment of the Roman Catholic Church, which at that time owned
vast amounts of land.  The French then came to power in Mexico for a short
period of time (1861-1867) and was overthrown by Juarez,  who later became
President of Mexico.  A brief Civil War broke out in 1920, but since that clash,
Mexico has enjoyed a gradual reform in agriculture, politics and religion.
